Richard F. Johnson, MD, MPH started his medical career in emergency medicine. As an emergency physician, Dr. J developed a visionary approach to managing work-related injuries outside the busy emergency room by establishing the first medical clinic in the Tampa Bay area specializing in occupational medicine. Since 1979, companies around the greater Tampa Bay have entrusted the care of their employees to Dr. Johnson and the Lakeside staff.
Dr. Johnson is American Board certified in Emergency Medicine as well as Occupational
and Environmental Medicine. Dr. Johnson served as the first overall medical director
for the Pinellas County EMS. Dr. Johnson is also a specialty certified Medical Review
Officer, workers’ compensation expert, and a Senior Aviation Medical Examiner. Dr. Johnson participates as a board member for the University of South Florida (USF) Medical Advisory Committee. He is also a member of the National Safety
Council, Bay Area Manufacturers Association, Suncoast Utility Contractors Association, National
Utility Contractors Association and West Coast Employers Association. He is a professional
member of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) and past
president of the FL chapter. He currently serves a president of the private practice sector
of ACOEM.
Through years of practice in occupation and environmental medicine, Dr. Johnson has developed
a broad-based expertise in the management of occupational health programs. Along with providing
direct care in Lakeside’s community-based clinics, Dr. Johnson also serves as consultant medical
director to a variety of companies. As medical director, Dr. Johnson assists companies in the
development of injury response procedures and provides management training on a variety of topics
based on an individual company’s needs.
Dr. Johnson frequently acts as lecturer for the Florida West Coast Association of Occupational Health
Nurses and for the USF Department of Public Health. The Florida State Association of Occupational Health
Nurses named Dr. Johnson the 1999 Provider of the Year for his support of the role of the occupational
health nurse. As medical director, Dr. Johnson has assisted in the development of integrated health
programs at four large companies that resulted in a greater than 80 percent saving in WC costs. Along
with his expertise in health and safety, Dr. Johnson is experienced in disability management and the
implementation of a Drug Free Workplace.
